Choosing the Right Company to Work for

The decision to switch jobs is no easy feat and there is a myriad of factors that go into making that decision. Whether you’re no longer enjoying your coworkers or don’t feel fulfilled in your role, it’s always okay to part ways with your current company.

Beginning the search for a role that will make you feel more fulfilled requires a different style of job search because it involves more than choosing a position that will pay you the highest salary or give you an inflated job title separate from your responsibilities.

The focus on your new role should lie in how you’ll feel and if you’ll thrive in a new organization’s environment. Success will come from choosing the right position that allows you to be productive, happy, and grow in your role. Be sure to self-reflect on previous positions and organizations to better understand what you may need for your future role.

With so many open jobs available, it can feel impossible to sift through and choose what’s best for you. However, setting yourself up for success by creating standards can lead to a long and successful career.

To start creating those standards, ask yourself a few basic questions about what you’re looking for in a job position.

  1. What type of job am I looking for? Consider factors like full-time or part-time, work from home or hybrid, etc.

  2. How/what would I like to feel at my job? Try reflecting on previous feelings in a role – did you feel career empowerment, happiness, success, or more? Don’t be afraid to chat with other people about where you’d like to see yourself in the future and ask what their company does to differentiate themselves from other opportunities.

  3. What size company would I like to work for? This could range from small, medium, or large to maybe a local business within your community.

  4. Do I want a company that will provide career growth opportunities including things like promotions and skill development? During the interview process, ask if the company is willing to invest in you.

  5. What kind of perks or benefits am I looking for? Write down any perks or benefits you want considered when searching for a new role like health insurance programs, bonus structures, and promotions.

  6. How much would I like to get paid? Do your research on what someone in your position with your amount of experience is currently making and practice discussing how your skills align with the pay.

Now that you’ve decided what’s right for you personally, use online job search platforms to help you filter opportunities that meet your standards. Research companies deeply before applying and ask yourself these questions during this process:

  • Does it seem like I’ll fit in? A huge part of choosing a great company to work for is feeling like you’re going to enjoy being there day to day.

  • Does this company have a good reputation? See what people are saying about them online, regardless of the company size. However, don’t just rely on their website or socials. Read outside reviews, find contacts that provide inside perspectives, watch videos, testimonials, etc.

  • Do I think I can learn something here? Progressing in your career doesn’t always mean a better title and more responsibility. Learning new skills and more about your industry is just as important as climbing the ladder.

Now that your criteria have [hopefully] been met, it’s time to apply and get that interview.

One more thing – don’t forget to enjoy the journey. Finding a new job that’s the right fit is a stressful process but could end up leading to a long-term position that keeps you feeling fulfilled.
